Position Summary
The Industrial Copper Tube Torch Brazing Technician is responsible for the installation, fitting and brazing of copper tubing and associated components used in industrial construction and mechanical systems. This position requires the ability to read drawings and specifications, prepare and assemble copper tubing systems, perform high-quality brazed joints, and work safely in industrial construction environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Read and interpret construction drawings, isometric drawings, specifications, weld/brazing procedures, and installation details.
Measure, cut, deburr, clean, and prepare copper tubing for installation.
Fit and assemble copper tubing, fittings, valves, supports, and associated components.
Perform torch brazing of copper-to-copper using appropriate brazing alloys and approved procedures.
Properly heat joints to achieve complete and consistent brazed connections without overheating or damaging tubing, fittings, or components.
Use appropriate fluxes, nitrogen purging, brazing alloys, torches, regulators, and related equipment when required by project specifications.
Maintain proper tube alignment, joint fit-up, insertion depth, and cleanliness prior to brazing.
Install tubing in accordance with drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and manufacturer requirements.
Properly use and maintain torches, brazing equipment, hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and other equipment.
Follow project-specific Quality Control requirements and inspection procedures.
Complete required documentation, inspection records, pressure-test documentation, and daily reports.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager.
Brazing Requirements
The technician must demonstrate the ability to:
Properly prepare copper tubing and fittings for brazing.
Select and use the appropriate brazing alloy for the application.
Properly operate oxy-fuel or approved brazing equipment.
Maintain appropriate heat control throughout the brazing process.
Produce uniform, complete, and visually acceptable brazed joints.
Use nitrogen purging when required for the system and project specifications.
Recognize common brazing defects, including incomplete penetration, overheating, contamination, insufficient filler material, excessive oxidation, and poor joint preparation.
Perform brazing in accordance with applicable project procedures and specifications.
Protect adjacent materials and equipment from heat, sparks, and flame.
Conduct required leak and pressure testing after installation.
Qualifications
Required
Must pass company provided brazing test.
Previous experience brazing copper tubing in a commercial, industrial, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, or mechanical construction environment.
Experience with silver-bearing or other specialized brazing alloys.
Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
Working knowledge of copper tubing, fittings, valves, and mechanical piping systems.
Ability to safely operate brazing equipment and related hand and power tools.
Ability to perform accurate measurements and layout.
Ability to work safely around open flame, compressed gases, elevated work areas, and active construction operations.
Ability to work independently and as part of a construction crew.
Reliable attendance and ability to work scheduled shifts, including overtime when required.
Preferred
Industrial construction experience.
Experience with HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic, process piping, or industrial mechanical systems.
Experience with nitrogen-purged brazing.
Experience with pressure testing and system commissioning.
